SPLIT LEATHERS - Leather undergoes a number of processing creating four main types:Aniline , Semi Aniline, Corrected grain and Nubuck. The top of the hide is by far the most durable, the surface of the hide or 'top grain' has a very tough, ridged and durable fibre structure. The raw hide is too thick for upholstery and it is segmented, the top surface is used to produce quality leathers as supplied by Forest Sofa, the rest of the leather (splits) has a far inferior fibre structure and is susceptible to splitting / tearing. The word split refers to the characteristic of the leather, and this poor material which is far cheaper than top grain, is often used on cheap imports. It is often misconstrued that thicker leather is better, this is however not the case. The average thickness for upholstery is 0.9mm - 1.2mm. Once again the best part of the hide is the top surface even leather 1.6mm thick if taken from below the surface is not going to be of the same quality or standard as 0.9 - 1.2mm top grain.
